![]() It is important for parents to keep in mind that children are expected to be able to instantly recognize sight words they have learned previously. Teachers will generally pull from one or both of these lists to create the sight words that children should learn. Like the Dolch Word list, the Fry Sight Word List is made up of both sight words and high-frequency words and is divided by grade level. Fry updated the Fry Sight Word List in 1980, which is comprised of the most commonly used words in books, newspapers, and other publications. Edward Fry expanded the Dolch Word List to include 1,000 commonly used words in the English language. In addition to the 220 sight words, the Dolch Word List also includes 95 high-frequency nouns. The list is divided by grade level from Pre-K through third grade, but many educators believe that these words should be mastered by first grade. The list contains 220 of the most commonly used words that should be recognized by first sight. One list is called the Dolch Word List, created by E.W. There are several sight word lists for emerging readers. Children who are able to instantly recognize sight words are more likely to be confident readers because over 50-70 percent of the general English text is made up of sight words. When children recognize sight words within three seconds, they are also more likely to comprehend what they are reading. Children who are able to quickly and instantly recognize sight words are more likely to become more fluent readers who read at a good speed because they are not stopping to try to decode every word. As a result, children must learn to recognize these words automatically, or at first sight. Most sight words cannot be decoded or sounded out, and they are also difficult to represent with a picture. These sounds usually follow basic spelling rules or phonetic principles, but there are some words that did not follow rules. When we teach children to read, we are basically helping them to crack a code. Children learn to hear and say the sounds of the alphabet and then how to blend those sounds to make words. One critical skill that children need in order to build solid foundational reading skills is sight word recognition. No matter whether kindergarten children will be learning in person, online, or a hybrid of the two, parents and teachers are still focused on ensuring their emerging readers develop a love for reading while learning to read effectively and efficiently.

![]() One of the biggest drivers of anxiety is the fact that the test is timed. If you don’t have some type of anxiety about the test then congratulations, for the rest of us the HESI can be very stressful and create a lot of anxiety. This is why Smart Edition Academy HESI A2 online course includes 8 timed practice tests, you really will need this many tests to build your endurance. Just like training for that marathon, you can start with one section like English, then try doing 2 sections back to back, then 3 and then practice sitting for all 4 sections at one time.ĭoing the full test one time might not be enough, you’ll want to do this several times as you get closer to your test date to really build that endurance. So this test is the same, you need to practice taking the individual sections in the allotted time. Would you attempt to run a 26.2 mile marathon without training and building up your endurance and stamina? That’s a rhetorical question, of course you wouldn’t.duh. I’ve seen it time and time again, students say their brain hurt after the test, they got to the last section and were out of gas, might as well have packed it up and gone home. ![]() The HESI is a long test at more than 5 hours depending on how many topics you have to take, so there are no two ways about it, you need the mental stamina and endurance to operate at peak performance from start to finish…or you won’t finish all the questions at all, time is your enemy on this one. To get you started you can take the free Smart Edition Academy HESI practice test. Most free HESI practice tests are not timed either nor do they have the same question count for each topic, you’ll see 10 or 15 questions but not the actual amount for that section. We’ve been doing this long enough here at Smart Edition to know that not all practice tests on the internet are created equally and especially not free HESI practice exams, most free HESI A2 practice tests aren’t created specifically for the HESI, instead the questions are repurposed from a question bank to be roughly similar but in reality chances are it won’t be very close. Once you have an idea of what your weak areas are you need to spend more study time on getting better at those topics, not just taking practice tests. So just be sure to balance the learning of the material with practicing test questions. What practice tests are good for is timing, stamina, and working under pressure. It’s worth pointing out that practice tests are good for practice but not so much learning, you won’t learn how to solve chemistry equations that you don’t know how to solve by taking the practice test, and you can’t work on finding the authors point of view without learning how to do that first. ![]() Research shows one of the most effective learning techniques and test taking strategies is to use practice tests before taking the actual test. You probably don’t remember learning how to read words like the, is, and am. ![]() These four nucleobases were probably not abundant on the early Earth, and conventional base pairing with the four canonical nucleobases does not occur in water, so then how could RNA exist? Another refresher for people not so familiar with DNA and RNA: a base pair is a pair of complementary nucleobases joined by weak hydrogen bonds. The ribose itself would have rapidly degraded if not used quickly, but the larger problem is that conditions were not conducive for the formation of nucleosides from ribose and the four canonical RNA nucleobases (adenine, guanine, cytosine, and uracil). The five-carbon sugar that forms the backbone of RNA is ribose.įorming RNA from the ribose produced from chemical evolution poses some problems, however. These sugars essentially form the backbones of DNA and RNA. A nucleotide is a nucleoside with an attached phosphate group, and a nucleoside is a nitrogenous base/nucleobase attached to a five-carbon sugar. At their foundations, RNA is typically composed of a single strand/chain of nucleotides whereas DNA is composed of two antiparallel strands/chains of nucleotides. First off, here is some preliminary information for those of you not overly familiar with DNA or RNA. The current leading hypothesis states that RNA evolved before DNA as the primary genetic material for early life, and even before RNA there likely existed some even simpler genetic system, but we will focus on the better understood RNA system. No matter the source, once present on Earth, chemical evolution drove the synthesis of amino acids, ribose and other sugars, and other important chemical components of life from simpler ingredients, but before the emergence of more conventional deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) based life, there existed a ribonucleic acid (RNA) world. The Earth was either seeded by meteors already carrying simple organic matter (pseudo-panspermia), or organic matter formed on Earth such as around deep sea hydrothermal vents. Most hypotheses for their sources fall into one of two categories: extraterrestrial or terrestrial origins. Of course these chemical ingredients had to come from somewhere. Many experiments, beginning with those of Stanley Miller in 1953, have shown that given the right mix of chemicals, liquid water, and energy, simple molecules will combine and rearrange to form complex organic matter such as the amino acids essential to life. If a cycle involved in self-replication diverges into two different cycles where one cycle produces the same molecule at a higher rate using the same materials, then this new cycle should outcompete and replace the original cycle. ![]() Self-replication inevitably gives rise to relatedness among molecules. The appearance of self-replicating molecules is key to further chemical evolution. The process gave rise to self-replicating molecules, provided the building blocks for life, and eventually led to the emergence of the first organisms. To be a bit more specific, chemical evolution explains the synthesis of organic matter from inorganic molecules followed by the increasing complexity of lifeless organic matter over time. Chemical evolution is the evolution of lifeless organic matter. So what is chemical evolution? It is not the evolution of life. Now you may be thinking to yourself “if life could not exist for the first 400-600 million years, the Earth is roughly 4.6 billion years old, and life does not appear until around 3.6 billion years ago, that still leaves another 400-600 million years unaccounted for.” What was occurring during this period of time you ask? The answer: chemical evolution. Sure enough, fossil records indicate the existence of cellular life around 3.6 billion years ago. Once these extreme conditions lessened to a large enough degree, however, life could take shape. Until its molten surface cooled allowing the crust to form and meteor strikes became less frequent, the development and sustenance of life would be virtually impossible. At its inception, and for a period afterwards, our planet had a molten surface under constant bombardment from meteors. Evidence suggests that the Earth was a largely inhospitable place for the first 400-600 million years of its existence. Conditions on Earth were not immediately suitable for life, nor did life originate late in its geologic history. A less common misconception involves just how long Earth has been habitable. Thanks to the efforts of modern science, we know the Earth to be around 4.6 billion years old. ![]() Earth’s age is not in the order of thousands, hundred of thousands, or millions of years. Our planet’s approximate age is a surprisingly common misconception among the public today.
